Discharges from the Emergency Department

Work in this area is ongoing as we strive to shift culture in the Emergency Department (ED) around reviewing and discharging admitted patients whose time in the ED has exceeded the 10-hr target.  

Previously, all admitted ED patients would await transfer to the inpatient units prior to determining a home support plan. ED leadership and the ED iCare team are now working to ensure that patients' files are reviewed each shift and, if a patient's discharge is likely, have staff work with patients on discharge planning in the ED rather than transfer them to an inpatient unit. This creates a more efficient experience for our patients, and ensures we are providing the most appropriate level of care at the right time, and in the right place.
