Alternate Levels of Care (ALC)

Western provinces and the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) worked to standardize Alternate Levels of Care (ALC) categories , which Providence implemented in the spring of 2017.

We now have a better understanding of why our patients are waiting in acute when they no longer need this specialized care.

This information allows us to better communicate with VCH Community in terms of gaps in care.

We are now in the process of rolling out a new report that highlights when a patient in one of these categories has exceeded a predetermined benchmark for moving to their next most appropriate location.

Frontline leaders can use this as a tool to identify the need for escalation and follow-up.
