Within 7-14 Days

  1. Meet and greet staff in your area. Arrange meetings with your Clinical Nurse Leader(s), Nurse Educator(s) and Clinical Nurse Specialist(s) and others in your area/program.
  2. Obtain access to HR Connect and ESP.  (On ESP, "Green" means WORKING; "Blue" means OFF; "SW" means SWAP; "V" means Vacation.)
  3. Schedule a meet and greet with your Human Resources Advisor.
    1. Get to know the Collective Agreements (e.g.,  HEU, BCNU, HSA).
    2. Find out who the Union representatives and Union stewards are, and when you may need them for meetings.
       
  4. Schedule a meet and greet with your Human Resources Recruitment Analyst. There are both External and Internal Advisors who can assist you with your staff postings, interviewing/qualifying/hiring of staff, transfers of staff, etc.
  5. Finance: Schedule a meet and greet with your Finance Advisor.  Know your costs centres (make sure that your name is listed with the correct cost centres (see #1c in the First 7 days section of this site). 
    1. Request a tutorial with the computer, where you are shown how to obtain reports. 
    2. Find out what your budget is and the breakdown of your budget.
       
  6. Familiarize yourself with PHC Connect
  7. Familiarize yourself with the rest of the Leaders' Resource Centre.  Contact the team at leadersresource@providencehealth.bc.ca if you have any questions about the site.
  8. Schedule a meet and greet with the main Staffing/Scheduling clerks in your area.
  9. Vacation: In the fall, you will need to be knowledgeable about Vacation Scheduling.  You will get details/emails from Human Resources regarding first, second and third vacation choices.  Depending on which staff report to you and the structure of your unit/program, there may be quotas for the number of staff who can be off at one given time.  Staffing/schedulers get the forms sent to them. 
    1. Requests for change of vacation cannot be submitted until the selection process has ended for third choice. You will have to use discretion in granting approval if there is not any backfilled required. You will need to know who else is off and what type of coverage is required. 
    2. As a rule, requests to change vacation may be approved for extenuating circumstances (e.g., a trip was cancelled), depending on operational needs, coverage required, the extra workload to do all of the paperwork. Once the decision is made, be sure to make the changes with staffing, payroll, records and benefits.  
       
  10. Schedule a meet and greet with your Occupational Health and Safety Advisor.
  11. Schedule a meet and greet with your Attendance Wellness Promotion (AWP) Analyst as they will be able to assist you regarding Attendance Wellness Promotion (sick time management).  You can find out who it is through the AWP Program Contact List.
  12. Schedule a meet and greet with the Professional Practice Leaders and/or the site leaders in your area/department/unit (e.g., Social Work, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Psychology, Speech Language Pathology, Nursing, Nutrition, etc.)
  13. Schedule a meet and greet with your Peer Mentor.
